What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a proven, evidence-based therapy that supports healing from unresolved trauma, chronic stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR helps the brain reprocess painful or distressing memories. During a session, you briefly focus on a difficult memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements or tapping—which allows the brain to release and rewire the emotional impact of those experiences.

Recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, EMDR is an effective treatment for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, addictions, and more.

Licensed to Serve You in Massachusetts

If you’re looking for EMDR therapy online in Massachusetts, I offer licensed, trauma-informed care statewide. As a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) with EMDR certification, I am authorized to provide therapy to clients throughout the state. Because sessions are conducted entirely online, therapy is accessible whether you’re in bustling Boston or a small town in the Berkshires. Your healing should fit your schedule and lifestyle.

How Does Online EMDR Therapy Work?

Using secure video sessions, I guide you through targeted EMDR techniques that help your brain safely reprocess painful experiences. EMDR utilizes “Bilateral Stimulation” to reprocess memories, and there are several options that have been adapted to an online therapy environment.

We'll use:

  • Visual bilateral stimulation through an application such as “Remote EMDR”

  • Auditory tones that can produce left to right sounds through headphones.

  • Tactile “buzzers” that can optionally be purchase through several different vendors.

Whether you’re in a busy city like Boston or a quiet town in the Berkshires, virtual therapy offers the flexibility, privacy, and convenience you need to prioritize your healing.

About Me

Meghan Gilliland, LCSW – licensed therapist offering EMDR therapy online in Massachusetts

Hi, I’m Meghan Gilliland, LCSW. I’m a trauma therapist dedicated to helping adults heal from the lasting effects of trauma, anxiety, grief, and early attachment wounds. I am licensed to provide online therapy to clients located in Arizona, Oregon, Washington, and Massachusetts, with a focus on creating a supportive space where you can safely explore and resolve the roots of emotional pain.

I’m certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and integrate a range of trauma-informed approaches into my work—including Internal Family Systems (IFS), Ego State Therapy, somatic practices, and mindfulness. I also offer Ketamine-Assisted EMDR Therapy™ for those seeking alternative pathways to healing.

In addition to working with adults navigating the effects of trauma, I specialize in providing therapy for other therapists, healers, and helping professionals who want space to do their own inner work. I also serve as an EMDRIA-Approved Consultant, supporting clinicians in their growth as trauma-informed EMDR practitioners.

At the heart of my work is a belief that healing is possible—and that therapy should support not only symptom relief, but a deeper reconnection to yourself, your values, and your capacity for meaningful relationships.

What to Expect From Online EMDR Therapy

1. Free Consultation

Your first step is to schedule a free 20-minute consultation. This gives us a chance to talk about what you're looking for in therapy, what I offer, and whether we’re a good fit. This also gives you an idea of what it feels like to meet with me online over Zoom so that we can determine if online therapy is a good option for you. If it feels like a match, we’ll schedule your first session.

2. Forms and Assessments

Before your first session, you’ll complete a set of consent forms and assessments through a secure online portal. These forms help me understand your history and what you’re hoping to address in therapy.

3. First Session: Diagnostic Assessment & Treatment Planning (60 minute session)

In this session, we’ll review the information you filled out in your forms and I’ll ask additional questions to provide an accurate diagnosis. A diagnosis is required both by insurance providers and by the licensing board in my home state, even if you're not using insurance. If you have concerns about receiving a diagnosis, we can discuss them during the consultation. Together, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan outlining your therapy goals and my recommendations for how we’ll work toward them.

4. Sessions 2–5: Psychoeducation, Coping Skills & Preparation (60 minute sessions)

During these first few sessions, you’ll discover more about how you were shaped by your biology, life experiences, and earliest relationships. I’ll help you build coping skills tailored to your needs and assess your readiness for processing distressing memories. We will also map out the different triggers and responses you wish to change and identify the memories that we will target in EMDR therapy to help you make the changes you desire.

5. Session 5 and Beyond: EMDR & Trauma Processing (60-90 minute sessions)

Once you're adequately prepared, we may begin EMDR therapy to process specific memories that contribute to your current challenges. If you have complex trauma, we may begin with other approaches—such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), Ego State Therapy, Clinical Hypnosis, or Somatic Therapy—to support emotional regulation and readiness for trauma work.

6. Ending Therapy

We’ll regularly review your progress and check the progress toward your goals throughout therapy. When you feel you've met your goals, we’ll plan a thoughtful conclusion to therapy. The pace and length of therapy are always individualized and collaborative.

FAQ

  • Yes. Massachusetts licensing laws require that you are physically located in the state during each therapy session. If you travel frequently, we can still meet online as long as you are within Massachusetts borders at the time of your appointment.

I am also licensed in the states of Oregon, Washington and Arizona- so if you travel to these states, I’ll be able to meet with you when you are there.

  • I am an Out of Network provider, which means I do not bill insurance companies directly. Instead, I provide a detailed receipt called a “superbill” that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement, depending on your Out of Network mental health benefits. Many clients are able to receive some cost coverage for their sessions this way. I recommend contacting your insurance provider to ask about your Out of Network benefits for telehealth therapy. The service code that I use for my standard 60 minute sessions is CPT 90837.

To simplify the process of using out of network benefits, I suggest using a service called Reimbursify.

  • Yes. I follow all Massachusetts licensing board requirements and use a secure, encrypted telehealth platform to ensure your privacy. I also offer guidance on how to create a safe and private space at home for your sessions.

  • No. My practice is fully online. This allows me to serve clients across the entire state of Massachusetts while offering greater flexibility and accessibility for those with limited time, transportation, or local provider options.

  • While online EMDR therapy is effective for many people, it may not be appropriate for individuals who are experiencing active suicidal ideation, recent psychiatric hospitalization, untreated psychosis, or severe dissociation that makes it difficult to stay present and grounded during sessions. If you're unsure, we can talk during a free consultation to determine whether online therapy is the right level of care for you—or if a higher level of support might be more appropriate.

Serving clients across the state of Massachusetts, my online therapy practice is proud to support individuals in Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Cambridge, Lowell, Brockton, Quincy, Lynn, New Bedford, Fall River, Newton, Somerville, Lawrence, Framingham, Haverhill, Waltham, Malden, Brookline, Medford, Taunton, Peabody, Everett, Arlington, Revere, Salem, Billerica, Chelsea, Amherst, Methuen, Northampton, Pittsfield, Fitchburg, Leominster, Greenfield, Barnstable, Attleboro, Beverly, Gloucester, and Westfield.
